I’m extremely sorry to report that Chang-Lin Tien, beloved chancellor of Berkeley from 1990-1997 died this past Tuesday, October 29, 2002. He was the first Asian-American chancellor of a major American university, and a tireless supporter of equality and opportunity at Berkeley. More about his legacy is published here. But in addition to being a great chancellor during a really difficult time in Cal’s history, he was truly a kind and giving person who loved Berkeley and its students. Today, I told a bunch of Cal students here the news, and every one was genuinely saddened. In all my time at Berkeley, I never met a single student who didn’t love him. Goodbye, Chancellor Tien! Go Bears!
