Somehow, because I’ve been embroiled in work for the past week, I totally missed the whole flareup over Geraldine Ferraro’s objectionable comments about Barack Obama’s race.
Here’s what she said:
If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman of any color, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.
Of course Hillary Clinton, who lives in a glass house in this regard, called the comment ‘regrettable’ and then allowed Ferraro to blather on for a week, all while claiming that, “Look, we know that we don’t control what is said by everybody who supports us.” That is a real quote from Hillary Clinton.
I call bullshit. First of all, Ferraro was on her finance committee. Secondly, Ferraro wouldn’t shut up for a week, and went on FOX to keep talking. In this era of reacting within a single news cycle, there is no way that someone associated with the Clinton campaign talks for that long, so visibly, on such a controversial topic, without the approval of the campaign.
And that’s what is so disturbing. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to divine the message – Barack Obama is black, and he’s an affirmative action case who is really unqualified for the position. It’s an insulting position to take and it’s also cynical in the extreme. It plays to our worst tendencies as a people and divides us as a nation. And oh, it’s something the Republicans would do. Her too-little-too-late repudiation of Ferraro is just fucking lame.
Ferraro, for her part, has resigned, but she is shocked (SHOCKED!) that anyone would consider her a racist. But who cares about Ferraro? She’s a nobody. It’s Clinton that I care about, and I for one, am done with her and her quasi-racist, unethical and frankly incompetent campaign. As a lifelong Democrat, and two time Bill Clinton supporter, I am swearing off all Clintons forever. I won’t vote for McCain, but I won’t vote for Hillary either. Or Chelsea. They’re all dead to me.
Oh, and check out this video of Keith Olbermann’s response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWAhITmoOlM
